Spring at Flat Rock Brook

Spring has arrived at Flat Rock Brook! The resident turtles in our ponds can often be found sunning themselves on a rock or fallen branch, the Spring Peeper frogs are calling at night and the vernal pools are brimming with young amphibians.

What is a vernal pool anyhow? They are temporary ponds that fill in with water during the spring when rain is heavy and dry up in the heat of the summer. They are wonderful breeding grounds for amphibians whose young live in the water but leave for land as an adult. Given the temporary nature of a vernal pool, the young amphibians can grow up in the pool without risk of being eaten by a fish. They will then go on to live their adult lives before returning to a vernal pool to lay their eggs.

Visit Flat Rock this spring and take a walk on our boardwalk to enjoy the sights and sounds of vernal pools and spring before heading to the pond in search of the frogs and turtles enjoying a sunny day alongside you.

NVE Bank Sponsors Summer Camp for Third Year

NVE logo colorNVE Bank Sends Kids to Summer Camp

Flat Rock Brook is celebrating its third year of awarding camp scholarships to deserving children in our community.  NVE Bank was our pilot partner in 2017 and provided one lucky child with a week exploring our forest and learning about nature through interactive crafts and activities.  The bank has supported us each summer and will send two lucky campers to our nature day camp in 2019.  Scholarships are awarded based on select criteria and affords kids the opportunity to spend a carefree week in our preserve.  This year, with the help of partners like NVE, we hope to award 20 one week scholarships to children grades K-8.

Flat Rock extends warm thanks to NVE Bank for their continued support on this important initiative.

New Caregiver Raptor Adoption!

Flat Rock Brook extends a warm thank you to Rachel and AJ Druck for being our newest Caregiver Adopters.  Their adoption of our Great Horned Owl will help with her care for  three months.  Her donation helps with food, toys, shelter maintenance and veterinary visits.

Adopting an animal at Flat Rock Brook for yourself, a friend, or your organization or school  is both rewarding and fun.

One of Flat Rock Brook's most popular exhibits is our aviary where we house 5 birds of prey that are all unable to be released into the wild.  Their home is now Flat Rock Brook, where our staff provides the care that they need.  Our birds act as animal ambassadors and help us teach thousands of people each year about protecting and respecting wildlife.

Various adoption levels allow our supporters to provide food, enrichment, and enclosure maintenance for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year.  Each level offers different benefits, such as a photo and certificate of adoption for your raptor or even a meet and greet!
